About Centre 33 Despite St Albans' affluent image, there are people sleeping rough in the area and others who are "dossing" on the floor of friends or in squats. Others may have moved on, but still require support. Centre 33 aims to help these people by being somewhere warm and dry to meet, offering hot food and drinks, and by providing toiletries and shower facilities. The need is there; in 2009 there were over 7500 visits to the centre by about 300 individuals. Centre 33 has operated continually since 1977. It is manned and managed solely by volunteers. The charity does not employ anyone. First names are used by everyone at the Centre, both volunteers and visitors. Centre 33 is a winner of the prestigious Queen's Award for Voluntary Service.
