We are keen to find new volunteers to support our service

Centre 33 only exists because of the generosity of so many in the St Albans area, whether in terms of time, donations of food, money etc or just practical support. Many of our visitors realise this and it is a source of comfort to know that they are not ignored or forgotten by so many in our community.

What does volunteering entail

Volunteers arrive half an hour before the Centre opens. This gives them time to get things ready and prepare the food which is provided by the Centre. They then serve food and drinks and give out towels and toiletries as required. There is always the opportunity to chat with the visitors, who appreciate the warm welcome given to them. Afterwards there is the washing up using a commercial dishwasher and general cleaning to leave the Centre ready for the next session. Volunteers spend about two hours at the Centre altogether.

The Centre always operates with a team of two or three volunteers on duty.  All new volunteers start working with two other experienced volunteers.

The Volunteer Coordinator arranges the weekly rota. Volunteers have complete flexibility to say when they would like to come to the Centre.  Typically it might be a two-hour session once a week or a fortnight, but it can be anything that suits you.

All our volunteers benefit from training in relevant courses - for example health and safety and food hygiene.

Interested in applying

We need volunteers Monday-Thursday & Sunday between 6.30-8.30pm.

  • Are you interested in providing practical support for rough sleepers and others in St Albans with inadequate housing?

  • Can you work in a small team, preparing simple meals and drinks?

  • Do you enjoy meeting new people?

  • Are you over 18?

If so, working as a volunteer at Centre 33 could be a rewarding and enjoyable experience for you.

If you'd like to apply, please do contact our Volunteer Coordinator through and we will send you an application form.  We will need the names of two people (not related) who can provide references.

Once you are accepted we will aim to get you working at the Centre with experienced people as soon as possible. We will also arrange your induction training.
